Clinical Islets Transplantation
The Cell Isolation and Transplantation Center at the University of Geneva has established one of the leading programs of clinical human islet transplantation into patients with type 1 diabetes. Additionally, since March 1999, our laboratory is the core facility of GRAGIL (groupe Rhin-Rhône-Alpes et Genève pour la transplantation d’îlots de Langerhans), the world largest multicenter network for clinical islet transplantation including the Universities of Lyon, Grenoble, Besançon, Strasbourg, Dijon, Nancy, Montpellier and Marseille. This network is politically recognized by Swisstransplant and the Agence Française de la Biomédecine, and by the French Ministry of Health.
Since 1991 the laboratory has developed an outstanding setup for large-scale human islet isolation. Islet transplantation has been performed in a variety of indications, i.e. solitary islet transplant (SIT), islet after kidney transplant (IAK) and simultaneous islet-kidney transplant (SIK). A program of autologous islet transplantation is also running since 1991.Type of transplantation
